Dozens of flats have been "badly damaged" by a large fire at an apartment block in Greater Manchester.

More than 100 firefighters are tackling the fire on the top floor of Wharfside flats on Heritage Way, Wigan, which began before 0400 BST.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said it "quickly escalated", adding all residents were evacuated but no-one was hurt.

Fifteen fire engines, including from Cheshire and Lancashire, at the scene.

Warren Pickstone, from GMFRS, said firefighters were also cutting away sections from the roof to get better access to the five-storey building, which is near the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

A rescue centre has been opened at nearby arts centre The Mill at the Pier by Wigan Council.
