Greater Manchester's tram network has been hit by cancellations and delays after overhead lines were severely damaged.

Bury and Rochdale services have been part-suspended, external, while other city centre services have also faced disruption due to the damage at Manchester Victoria.

The disruption happened after a storm on Sunday afternoon.

Metrolink said services were predicted to be busier than usual later, due to Manchester City's victory parade.

No tram services operated from Heaton Park or Bowker Vale on Sunday evening, forcing many of the thousands who had used the service to attend the Parklife festival to use a shuttle bus service or other means to get home.

The storm also saw the event at Heaton Park briefly halted for safety reasons.

Manchester councillor Pat Karney told BBC Radio Manchester people were "really brassed off" after disruption caused problems for both those leaving the festival and the annual Soccer Aid charity football match at Old Trafford.

"Of all the times for this to happen, it is just so unlucky and disappointing," he said.

He added that the council would ask regional body Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) "for a full brief as to what happened".

A Metrolink representative said tickets and passes could be used on selected bus services and advised passengers to check its website for the latest updates, external.

They said engineers were continuing to work on repairing the damaged lines.

The disruption has seen services on the Bury line start and end at Abraham Moss and trams to Rochdale and Oldham run as far as Monsall.

There were also changes to some of Metrolink's other lines, with East Didsbury services terminating at Deansgate Castlefield, Manchester Airport trams stopping at Firswood and Trafford Park services only operating as far as Cornbrook.

The BBC has contacted TfGM for comment.
