Train passengers have been delayed for up to an hour after a tree fell on a railway line.

Northern passengers faced services being cancelled and had to travel by coach after the incident at Lostock junction near Bolton at about midday.

The company said the disruption was due to last into the afternoon, affecting trains between Preston and Bolton.

Network Rail said the tree had fallen on high-voltage overhead electricity cables.

Services from Blackpool North, Windermere and Barrow-in-Furness to Manchester Airport were also affected.

A Network Rail spokesman apologised to passengers, adding: "Our engineers are on site working as fast as they can to fix the issue."
