A murder investigation has been launched after the remains of a man missing for more than a month were found near a sports club.

Tanyaradzwa Julius Matara, 43, was discovered on land between Great Cheetham Street West and Broughton Cricket and Rugby Club in Salford.

Police said Mr Matara was considered "high risk" and had been missing since late October.

Three men were arrested on suspicion of murder and released on bail.

Greater Manchester Police said officers began a search last week after a tip off referring to an area of rough ground and dense shrubbery.

Human remains later identified as Mr Matara's body were found at about 02:30 GMT on Thursday.

Det Ch Insp Rachel Smith said: "The force has been searching for Julius after he was circulated as a high-risk missing person at the end of October.

"Everyone had been working hard to locate him and this is a truly sad ending.

"We have been conducting our enquiries to gather as much information as we can to paint a picture of how Julius sadly died.

"I would like to thank the community in Salford who have been patient with us during our searches. I understand this is a deeply concerning case for the residents in the area."

She said the force needed as much detail as possible and appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
