Manchester United v Liverpool: Fan charged with tragedy chanting

Police have issued a warning to supporters attending further fixtures in Greater Manchester

A football fan has been charged in connection with tragedy chanting at the Manchester United v Liverpool FA Cup quarter-final match.

Michael Bernard Avery, 44, from Manchester, was charged with a public order offence and bailed.

It followed an investigation by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) after a video was shared of a man in the home section of the Old Trafford crowd.

A video of an alleged offence in the Liverpool end is being investigated.

GMP has worked closely collaboration with both clubs and supporters' groups to investigate a number of reports of tragedy chanting and video clips on social media.

Ch Insp Jamie Collins said: "We encourage members of the public to carry on reporting incidents so we can investigate."

He added: "I would also like this to be a strong warning for any supporters attending future fixtures in Greater Manchester, including the up-and-coming Premier League fixture between these two clubs, that if you engage in this behaviour GMP officers will do everything possible to bring you in front of the courts.

"Both clubs involved, and the vast majority of supporters agree with this stance and despite the time passed we will continue to take proactive and appropriate action to tragedy chanting amongst other offences."
