Liverpool's second cruise centre bid

Previous bids for a cruise terminal were rejected

Liverpool is making a second attempt to become a base for cruise liners.

New plans have been submitted for a terminal at the Pier Head to allow ships to start and finish their journeys at the port.

The idea was previously rejected on the grounds it would create "unfair competition" to other ports.

But the bid is being resubmitted after the European Cruise Council said Liverpool's market share would be just 3%.

Currently Liverpool is just a port of call for cruise ships.

Councillor Joe Anderson, leader of Liverpool City Council, said, "We shouldn't be restricted by another port's view of what would be detrimental to them."

Mr Anderson said it was "perverse" to have invested in the facility for cruise ships, but not to "be allowed to use it to the full".
