Street named after former Beatle drummer Pete Best

The Beatles' former drummer Pete Best said he was "very humbled" to have two Liverpool streets named in his honour.

The roads, Pete Best Drive and Casbah Close, will be on a new estate to be built on Everton's former training ground at Bellfield in West Derby.

The housing development was chosen as Best comes from the area and the Casbah Club, where The Beatles began their career, is less than half a mile away.

It follows a campaign on Facebook supported by more than 10,000 people.

Best said: "I feel very humbled, very flattered and very honoured that the city of Liverpool, council members and the people of Liverpool have thought to honour me in such a fantastic way."

Best was a member of the Beatles from August 1960 until he was replaced by Ringo Starr in August 1962.

He said he was also pleased at the recognition of the The Casbah Club, which was started by his mother, Mona Best, in 1959.

"The Cashbah Coffee Club was the catalyst for the Merseybeat sound. It was the original birthplace of The Beatles on August 29 1959 and it is great that I've been associated with that as well.

"I just wish that she was still here to receive the honour herself because she was the mother of merseybeat and her memory, The Casbah Close, will live on alongside my name."
