WWII Merchant Navy remembrance service in Liverpool

The service was followed by a parade and wreath laying ceremony

Hundreds of people attended a service of remembrance in Liverpool for the 60,000 Merchant Navy sailors who died during World War II.

Representatives of the People's Republic of China joined veterans for the first time at the service at St Nicholas Church at 12:00 BST.

The service was followed by a parade to the Pier Head Merchant Navy memorials.

Liverpool was the main base for the Battle of the Atlantic, in which 36,000 merchant seamen died.

Golden books of remembrance, listing the names of all British seafarers who died in the war and ships which were lost, are on display at St Nicholas Church.

Representatives from India, the Netherlands and Canada also took part in the memorial event.
