High winds damage Saints' new Langtree Park stadium roof

High winds have damaged part of the roof at the new home of St Helens rugby league club.

The Super League side have only recently moved to the new £20m Langtree Park ground near St Helens town centre.

Their first official match there is due to take place in just over two weeks' time, against Widnes on 20 January.

The full extent of the damage is not yet known. A club spokesman said the affected part of the stadium had been cordoned off.

He said: "We've got to wait for the contractors who built the stadium to come and inspect it before we can make a formal assessment of the damage.

"As a precaution, the club has cordoned off the affected area."

The Saints played at the GPW Recruitment Stadium in Knowsley Road from 1890 to 2010.

They played all of their 2011 Super League and Cup matches at the Stobart Stadium in Widnes, and are now set to move into their new 18,000-capacity stadium.

Langtree Park is the centrepiece of the regeneration of the former United Glass site on Peasley Cross Lane.
