Hotel plan for Liverpool's Littlewoods site approved

The art deco property was built in the 1930s

Liverpool's Littlewoods building is to be turned into a hotel, after plans were approved by the city council.

Developer Capital & Centric applied to acquire the art deco building on Edge Lane and turn it into a hotel.

It also wants to provide business and commercial space, potentially creating hundreds of jobs.

The property was built in the 1930s for Sir John Moores and his brother Cecil to house their football pools business.

There were no objections to the scheme and the council's planning committee approved the plan unanimously.

The building was designed by Scottish Architect Gerald de Courcey Fraser, who also designed a number of department stores for Lewis's.

It has been empty for more than 10 years.

Capital & Centric hopes to start refurbishment works in the summer.
