About 60 firefighters are tackling a major fire at a scrap metal recycling centre on the docks in Bootle.

The blaze broke out at Alexandra Dock in Bootle at about 04:00 GMT and is affecting plant machinery and storage areas, Merseyside Fire and Rescue said.

There is a large plume of smoke over the area and residents in Bootle and Seaforth are being asked to stay inside with doors and windows closed.

Passing motorists should also keep windows and air vents closed.
