A man who was one of three people who suffered "stab and slash wounds" in a "targeted" assault at a block of flats has died, police have said.

Merseyside Police said the 28-year-old, along with another man and a woman, was hurt at the address on Upper Warwick Street, Toxteth, on Sunday afternoon.

The force said he died later in hospital, while the other man remains critically ill.

A representative added that the woman was in a serious but stable condition.

Appealing for information, they said the assault happened in a communal area of a block of flats at about 13:00 GMT.

They added that no arrests had been made and a post-mortem examination to establish the cause of the man's death would take place later.

Det Ch Insp Allison Woods said it was "a shocking attack".

She added that although it was "still early" in the investigation, the force believed the attack was "targeted" and the person responsible was "known to the victims".
