A man has been airlifted after he fell from a ferry sailing near Liverpool, emergency services have said.

The alarm was raised at about 08:15 GMT on Saturday after he fell from the Stena Estrid travelling from Belfast to Birkenhead, HM Coastguard said.

Lifeboat crews from northern England and Wales mounted a search before he was found and airlifted by a helicopter three hours later.

He was taken to hospital but details of his condition are not yet clear.

A spokeswoman for Stena Line said police were investigating and that their vessel was continuing with its normal operation.

The BBC has contacted Merseyside Police for information.
