A jogger who was hit by a van in a hit-and-run crash has died in hospital, police have said.

The 81-year-old man was struck at 18:30 GMT on Sunday in Utting Avenue East, Norris Green, Liverpool, and died on Monday evening.

A man, 37, of Mossley Hill, has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and is in police custody for questioning.

Two other people who were previously arrested have been bailed.

Merseyside Police had issued an appeal to identify the jogger and trace his family through what he was wearing while out running, who have now been traced.

Det Sgt Jason Higham said: "Our thoughts are with the man's family and they are being supported at this difficult time.

"I would like to thank those that helped at the scene of the incident on Sunday night, and who have helped with our inquiries to identify the man which assisted in finding his family before he died."

The force said the man had been wearing a black Karrimor long-sleeved jacket with a bright yellow Karrimor cap when he was out running.

Police have also appealed for any witnesses and urged anyone with CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage which could help the inquiry to come forward.
