A man has been charged with causing the death of a jogger by dangerous driving.

John Newton, 81, was struck by a Ford Transit van on the evening of Sunday 25 February in the Norris Green area of Liverpool.

Mr Newton, a semi-retired mechanic and grandfather, died of his injuries in hospital the following day.

Christopher Daly, 42, has been charged with four offences and will appear in Wirral Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, Merseyside Police said.

Mr Daly, of Walton Village, is accused of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop after a collision, driving without insurance and driving without a valid licence.

A 37-year-old man from the Mossley Hill area of Liverpool, who had also been arrested, remains on conditional bail pending further inquiries.

'Still very active'

Mr Newton could not immediately be identified after being taken to hospital, and police issued an appeal based on his clothing.

His family later thanked those who came to help Mr Newton after he was struck while out for a run on Utting Avenue East.

They said in a statement: "John is missed by his whole family including children, grandchildren and the community we live in.

"He was well-known in the area having owned his own garage and worked as a mechanic for over 50 years before semi-retiring last year."

Mr Newton was described as "still very active" and enjoying cycling and running.

The family added: "We hope that those responsible for his death or that know anything will have a turn of conscience and come forward to the police."

Merseyside Police have urged witnesses or anyone with CCTV or dash-cam footage to come forward.
