Detectives have charged a second man over the death of a jogger.

John Newton, 81, died in hospital after being hit by a Ford Transit van in Norris Green, Liverpool, at 18:25 GMT on Sunday 25 February.

Merseyside Police said a 37-year-old man from the Mossley Hill area has been charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

He is due to appear at Wirral Adult Remand Court on Wednesday.

Christopher Daly, 42, of Walton Village, has previously been charged with a number of offences in connection with this incident.

He has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, using a motor vehicle on a road without third party insurance, failing to stop after a road accident and driving a motor vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

Mr Daly remains in custody.

Investigation ongoing

A 39-year-old woman from Walton arrested last week on suspicion of assisting an offender has been bailed.

A 40-year-old man from Walton who was arrested earlier this week on suspicion of assisting an offender has also been bailed.

Merseyside Police Detective Inspector Steve Street said: "This investigation is very much ongoing, and we have now charged two men in connection with the death of Mr Newton.

"Please come forward if you hold any information to assist, however small a detail you think it is, and we will continue to take action."

Merseyside Police has urged witnesses or anyone with CCTV or dash-cam footage to come forward.

Mr Newton was identified after police issued an appeal based on his clothing.

The family of Mr Newton, a semi-retired mechanic and grandfather, have thanked those who came to help him after he was struck while out for a run on Utting Avenue East on 25 February.
