A man and a woman have been arrested after a fight outside a school which led to children being kept inside.
A man suffered a serious facial injury during the incident on Pilch Lane, Huyton, Knowsley, at about 15:25 BST on Wednesday, Merseyside Police said.
Knowsley Council said pupils were unable to leave St Margaret Mary's Junior School until officers arrived.
A man, 53, of Roby, and a woman, 42, were held on suspicion of assault and released on conditional bail.
The woman, from Huyton, was also arrested on suspicion of criminal damage.
Det Insp Michael Fletcher said: "This incident happened close to St Margaret Mary's Junior School, and will have been upsetting to witness, for children, parents and staff."
He said the investigation continued to "establish the full circumstances" and officers would be "offering reassurance" as they carried out inquiries in the area.
A spokesman for Knowsley Council said: "Due to an incident that took place outside St Margaret Mary's Junior School at school pick up time on Wednesday, pupils remained in the school for a short time as a precaution until the police had arrived."
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has CCTV or dashcam footage is urged to contact police.
