First ship docks at new Great Yarmouth grain terminal

The first ship has docked at a new £5m grain terminal at a Norfolk port.

The Arklow Raven is being loaded at Great Yarmouth's Outer Harbour with 4,200 tonnes of feed barley bound for Lisbon, Portugal.

The new grain terminal, run by Gleadell Agriculture, is expecting to export five more 2,000 tonne consignments of feed wheat to Rotterdam soon.

It anticipates a total of 500,000 tonnes of grain exports a year from Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk.

A new grain loader at the terminal was built in Ely and is able to handle 1,000 tonnes of grain an hour.

The new storage and drying facility at the port has been welcomed by maltsters and hauliers, who said it would help them reach new markets.

The new outer harbour at Great Yarmouth allows ships of up to 25,000 tonnes to dock at the port.

Until now the nearest ports with similar sized grain terminals have been Immingham on the Humber and Tilbury on the Thames.
