Morning drink-driving arrests up in Northamptonshire

The number of people arrested for drinking and driving during the morning has increased in Northamptonshire.

Police said drivers still did not get the message that drinking at night could mean arrest the following day.

During the Christmas campaign, 1,066 breath tests were carried out and 95 people arrested with 60 charged. Six arrests were between 0700 GMT and noon.

Ch Insp Sean Bell said people did not seem to understand how long it took for alcohol to leave the body.

"Although the number of drink-drive arrests is down from last year, it is hugely disappointing to see that almost 100 people risked their lives, and the lives of others, by getting behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol.

"Once again around 30% of the arrests were young drivers aged between 17 and 24, yet they represent only 11% of all licence holders in the county.

"This campaign also saw the number of 'morning after' arrests increase compared to last year.

"Many people still don't realise you can be over the limit the morning after drinking."
