Work has begun on a new £10m specialist motorsports college at the Silverstone race track in Northamptonshire.

Silverstone University Technical College (UTC) will offer full-time courses for up to 250 people in engineering and event management.

Workshops and open plan buildings are to be built within the grounds of the Silverstone circuit.

The university college is expected to open in September 2013 in time for the next academic year.

Local businesses, the Silverstone Circuit, Tresham College and the University of Northampton have sponsored the project, which has been paid for using government money.

Project manager Robert Emery said: "The new college would give young people the chance to blend high level technical skills with academic education."
