A railway worker who was hit by a train has died from his injuries, British Transport Police (BTP) have revealed.

John Wright, 49, from Doncaster, a member of Network Rail's track team, was working at Newark Northgate Station when he was struck on 22 January.

He was flown to the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham with head, facial, chest and pelvic injuries.

Mr Wright died in hospital on Friday 31 January, but that information has only now been revealed.

'Deeply saddened'

Mr Wright was injured only about 20 miles from where another rail worker from Doncaster was hit and killed by a train a year earlier.

Scott Dobson, 26, died while working near Saxilby in Lincolnshire. A report into his death by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) highlighted a string of failures.

A police spokesman said: "BTP was informed by hospital staff that the man had died at 17:35 GMT on Friday.

"Our thoughts remain with Mr Wright's family at this difficult time."

Detectives have said they are trying to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.

Phil Verster, Network Rail route managing director, said: "We are all deeply saddened by this news and our thoughts and prayers are with our colleague's friends and family."

The RAIB and Office of Rail Regulation have been informed, BTP said.
