Shih tzu in bow tie comforts mourning families at crematorium

The crematorium has been taking requests from people who want her at funerals

A Nottinghamshire crematorium is using a comfort dog to help people deal with their grief.

Maisie the shih tzu is providing a friendly face for mourners saying goodbye to their loved ones at Rushcliffe Oaks crematorium, near Stragglethorpe.

She attends services, wearing a trademark bow tie, to offer "fuss and cuddles" to people who need them.

Maisie has been bring "smiles to faces" at difficult times, bosses said.

Crematorium manager Rhonda Churchill, who is eight-year-old Maisie's owner, said she was was one of the first comfort dogs to be used in the country.

Mrs Churchill said: "The reception Maisie has been given has been nothing but positive and we have started getting requests for her to attend funerals or when people are coming to look around the facility.

"It takes the edge off and gives that little distraction so when you're talking through arrangements or you're about to have a service that is particularly sensitive, it just takes that focus away for a few moments."

The crematorium is run by Rushcliffe Borough Council and deputy council leader Abby Brennan said: "Maisie is a fantastic asset and a very friendly face for everyone.

"It's delightful she can come out and give people fuss and cuddles when they may need it most.

"She can provide support and a momentary distraction for people at some of their darkest times. Our local funeral directors, celebrants and others love seeing her too."
