Argos distribution workers in Bridgwater on strike

Workers at an Argos distribution centre in Somerset have gone on strike in a row over pensions.

The stoppage at the site in Bridgwater started on Wednesday and so far the Unite union says about 190 workers have taken part.

Parent company Home Retail Group said it was closing its final salary pension scheme and replacing it with a "competitive" alternative.

A spokeswoman said stocks were still getting to stores in the area.

"We have brought in a number of third-party contractors to keep operations moving and ensure our customers remain unaffected," she said.

"Despite only 30% of union members voting in favour of industrial action, Unite have decided to proceed with strike action," the company spokeswoman added.

A spokesman for Unite said the decision to close the final pension scheme and replace it with a money purchase scheme could severely reduce the pensions of Argos employees.

He added the union wanted the dispute to go to the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas).

"Our members have gone on strike and this has caused considerable disruption to store deliveries for the company.

"If Argos does not agree more strikes could be on the cards."

The Bridgwater depot has about 240 staff as well as agency workers.
