A man has died after falling over and being hit by a van on a major commuter route.

The A303 at Broadway, Somerset was shut for 11 hours on Thursday after a crash around 04:30 GMT, between the Southfields roundabout and Shave Lane, near Ilminster.

Avon and Somerset Police have said they believe the man in his 70s fell before being hit by a van.

Police said the man died at the scene after being helped by paramedics.

The force have started an investigation and want anyone who was travelling along the A303 to get in touch with them.

"Both the A303 and A358 were closed to allow enquiries to take place."
