Philip McCauliffe died on Friday

A man whose death has sparked a murder investigation has been named by police.

Philip McCauliffe, 67, was found dead at a property in Ironside Walk, Gleadless, Sheffield on Friday.

South Yorkshire Police said officers were called at about 13:30 GMT and initially arrested a man, 39, and a woman, 37, on suspicion of assault.

The force said the pair and a 35-year-old man were later arrested on suspicion of murder. They have since been bailed pending further inquiries.

A post-mortem examination concluded Mr McCauliffe died from a bleed on the brain.

Police said despite a number of inquiries, the force had been unable to identify a next of kin.

Family members of Mr McCauliffe as well as anyone with information about his death should contact South Yorkshire Police.

Det Ch Insp Andrew Knowles, senior investigating officer, said: "We have been working around the clock since Friday to build up a picture of what happened to Philip in the run-up to his tragic death.

"We are aware of reports that Philip was assaulted prior to his death and have been making extensive enquiries, including going house-to-house in the community, to gather information which could help us to secure justice."
