Low temperatures are expected to bring snow and ice across Yorkshire

Snow showers could bring disruption across Yorkshire on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Met Office has warned.

Two yellow weather warnings, external for snow and ice have been issued for parts of North, South and West Yorkshire from midnight until 23:59 GMT on Wednesday.

BBC Look North climate correspondent Paul Hudson said there could be between two and four inches (5-10cm) of snow in the Yorkshire Dales.

Sleet and snow is expected to continue on Wednesday.

The Met Office said up to an inch of snow was possible on high ground, with small chance of around two inches (5cm) falling in one or two upland areas on Wednesday.

This week will see the coldest spell of the winter so far, with widespread frosts in all areas.

Last week, there was much talk about widespread snow chaos, particularly online and in the tabloids, but this is not expected.

That said, there will be some snow and a Met Office warning is in place for western parts of our region from midnight.

Snow showers are expected, especially later tomorrow and into tomorrow night, with two to four inches (5-10cm) possible in The Yorkshire Dales, this risk extending into other Pennine areas later.

A a slight covering elsewhere is possible, leading to widespread ice as temperatures fall well below freezing.

The cold spell will last all week before milder wetter weather arrives at the weekend.

Overnight temperatures will be well below freezing, meaning some of the coldest weather so far this winter can be expected, the Met Office said.

An amber cold weather warning, external has been issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the Met Office.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at UKHSA, said the low temperatures expected could "rapidly have a serious impact on the health of those over the age of 65 and those with pre-existing health conditions".

"It is therefore vital to check in on friends, family and neighbours to ensure they are well prepared for the cold weather," he added.
