Thousands take part in Brighton Marathon

The Brighton marathon was the second for the city

About 8,000 people have been pounding the seafront and streets of Brighton in the city's second marathon.

The organisers said they had sold 15,000 places for the event, but the unusually hot weather seemed to have deterred some of the runners.

Thousands of spectators lined the 26.2 mile route, which began in Preston Park and finished on Madeira Drive.

British middle-distance champion Steve Cram, who was not competing himself, started the event.

Philemon Kiprop Boit, from Kenya, completed the route in the fastest time, at 2:16:07. The women's winner was Alyson Dixon at 2:34:51.

Many runners donned elaborate fancy dress outfits, with one entrant dressed up as a stick of Brighton rock.
