University of Brighton proposes maximum tuition fees

The University of Brighton is proposing tuition fees of £9,000 a year for its undergraduate courses from 2012.

Professor Julian Crampton said: "Our proposals will enable us to continue to develop and deliver cutting-edge professionally-focused education."

The university's partner colleges want to charge between £7,000 and £8,300 for their foundation degrees.

At least two-thirds of English universities want to charge the maximum fees, according to a BBC survey.

The survey of 71 institutions suggests maximum fees will not be "exceptional" as the government had claimed.

"We have come to the firm conclusion that to continue to provide the high-quality professional and socially and economically-relevant degree courses for which the University of Brighton is renowned, we need to ensure significant flows of future income," said Professor Crampton, the university's vice chancellor.

The University of Sussex also proposes to charge £9,000 tuition fees.

Universities have to submit their plans for fees for 2012 to the Office for Fair Access.
