Proposals are being considered for a new £1.2m athletics track in West Sussex to replace an existing site which is to be demolished.
Horsham District Council said it was working with Tanbridge House School, where the track would be located.
It would be open throughout the year and available to the wider community.
Last month Olympic gold medallist Sally Gunnell joined a protest against plans to demolish the existing Broadbridge Heath leisure centre and running track.
Bob Dulieu, chair of school governors at the school in Horsham, said: "We believe that this exciting development provides another significant opportunity for Tanbridge House to remain at the heart of Horsham district's vibrant community."
Leader of Horsham District Council, Councillor Ray Dawe, added that the project was still at an early stage, but locating the new facility at the school would see "regular use during the day by local children and will help to nurture their sporting talents".
"In the evenings and holidays the facilities will be available for community use," he said.
