Officers face probe over Duncan Tomlin custody death

Five Sussex Police officers have been served with gross misconduct notices after a man died following his arrest.

Duncan Tomlin, 32, from Burgess Hill, was detained on 26 July and put in a police van in Ryecroft, Haywards Heath.

After becoming unwell, he was taken out of the van and given CPR. He was taken to hospital where he later died.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said a police sergeant and four PCs will be interviewed.

IPCC investigators have viewed CCTV footage and statements from the officers involved which were made on the night Mr Tomlin was arrested, a spokesman said.

The IPCC spokesman said the investigators were examining the restraint used on Mr Tomlin on the street and in the rear of the police van, and the medical treatment he received.
