Sussex Police have released an image from mobile phone footage of a man they want to trace in connection with an assault

Officers investigating a report of an assault before a football match have issued an image of a man they wish to speak to.

The assault took place on Saturday outside the Amex Stadium prior to the fixture between Crystal Palace and Brighton & Hove Albion.

A man was assaulted while officers were responding to altercations between supporters, Sussex Police said.

The force confirmed seven people were arrested during clashes between fans.

The man is described as white, in his 40s, with short, light coloured hair. He was wearing a black coat with blue jeans, white trainers and a blue scarf, the force said.

PC Darren Balkham, Sussex Police's dedicated football officer, said: "We'd like to thank the vast majority of fans who behaved responsibly before, during and after the game.

"However, there was a small minority of fans who displayed disruptive and disorderly behaviour," he added.

Anyone who recognises the man is urged to contact police.
