Middlesbrough's historic quarter revamp complete

Work has been completed on a major project to preserve and improve Middlesbrough's historic quarter.

The Middlesbrough Townscape Heritage Initiative Scheme was made possible through a £750,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

It helped fund the refurbishment of six listed buildings in the town's Historic Quarter Conservation Area, centred on Middlesbrough Railway Station.

Some buildings have been brought back into use in the town's retail centre.

Projects completed include The Ayresome Park Public House which has been refurbished to become a bar and nightclub.

The PD Ports brick and terracotta office building in Queens Square has been repaired.

'Future generations'

Also, the former parcel deport and fish quay at the railway station has been refurbished to provide studio space for local artists.

The 4 Exchange Place adjacent to the railway platform has been refurbished and converted into apartments and a food outlet.

And the former Trustees Savings Bank at 34-36 Albert Road, and the adjoining offices at 38-40 Albert Road, have been converted into apartments to the first floor and above, with shops, restaurants or offices planned for the ground floor.

Councillor Julia Rostron, Middlesbrough Council's Historic Environment Champion, said: "The area contains a wealth of buildings of strong historical and architectural interest and I'm delighted to see some of these being renovated and brought back to use.

"This initiative has ensured these fine buildings will be enjoyed by future generations - that's exactly what the Heritage Lottery Fund is all about."
