Mrs Butterwick died peacefully in the hospice she founded

The founder of Butterwick Hospice Care has died.

Mary Butterwick OBE died on Wednesday, aged 91, in the care of the institution she set up in 1984.

The charity has two sites in Stockton and Bishop Auckland which provide care and support for people living with a progressive life-limiting illness.

Chief executive Graham Leggatt-Chidgey, said she left behind a "magnificent legacy" which would continue to benefit the community for many years to come.

A memorial book has been placed at both hospices for members of the public.
