British landmarks crafted from cake shown in Gateshead

A previous Cakebook event featured an edible version of Gateshead's Angel of the North

A giant map featuring Britain's most famous landmarks is to be crafted from cake on Tyneside, although the wet weather has forced a change of venue.

Amateur and professional bakers will create the 33ft x 33ft (10m x 10m) map for the Cakebook Britain event.

It will feature locations including Buckingham Palace, Scarborough seafront, Baltic art centre, Blackpool Tower and Hadrian's Wall.

The event takes place at Gateshead International Stadium on 15 July.

'Soggy cake'

Originally it was due to be held in Saltwell Park, but persistent rain has made the ground unsuitable and the stadium also has the option of indoor or outdoor locations.

Cakebook is part of the EAT! NewcastleGateshead food festival which showcases local food producers, restaurants and culinary talent.

Festival director, Simon Preston, said: "It's disappointing that we've had to make the decision to move the Cakebook Britain event but our paramount concern is making sure everyone has a great time, and no-one likes soggy cake.

"A little bit of rain isn't going to stop us from creating our edible map of Great Britain so we hope everyone who planned to come along on Sunday is able to join us."
