Washington lottery winners have no plans to quit jobs

The couple are the fourth Lottery winners from the North East in the last month, Camelot said

A factory worker and bingo supervisor celebrating winning £1m on the EuroMillions draw insist they have no plans to leave the jobs they love.

Ian McCarthy, 48, and his wife Kim, 50, won the prize on Christmas Day but did not check the ticket until 10 days later.

The couple, from Washington, Tyne and Wear, said they had never left the UK and only got their passports last year.

Mrs McCarthy finished her shift at work after being told the good news.

Her husband, a car manufacturer, did not check the ticket on Christmas Day because the family was entertaining guests.

'Off his trolley'

Mr McCarthy was putting up a television bracket with his son when he remembered he had the ticket.

"I put the numbers in and it said you are a winner," he said.

"I did it again, because I did not believe it, and then shouted my son in and we hugged each other."

Mr McCarthy went to the bingo hall where his wife was working and went on stage to surprise her after double checking the numbers.

"I said he was off his trolley and thought he was having me on," Mrs McCarthy said.

"I did not believe it until we went over to the supermarket and it said we had won.

"I then went back to work because I wanted to finish my shift."

The couple have two sons and have been married for 21 years.
