Cleaners working on the Tyne and Wear Metro will strike for a week as part of a dispute over pay.

The cleaners, who work for Churchill, will take a further seven days of strike action from 22:30 GMT on Friday.

The Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union said the action would come to an end at 22:29 GMT on Friday 22 February.

RMT general secretary, Bob Crow, said members had shown "guts and determination" in a long campaign of "rock-solid" strike action.

Services on the network have been unaffected by previous strikes by the cleaners.
