Rifles Regiment supports memorial plan for Trowbridge

Plans for a memorial to fallen soldiers in a Wiltshire town have received the backing of their local regiment.

Trowbridge Town Council say they are considering building a memorial as a tribute to the town's involvement in military repatriations.

Some of the military personnel who were returned to RAF Lyneham were taken to Trowbridge Coroners Court for inquests.

The Royal Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Berkshire Rifles Regiment wants to see an event to mark the occasion.

Chairman Bill Sherman, who lives in Trowbridge, thinks such a ceremony would "bring closure" now that repatriations have moved to RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire.

He said: "I think there should be some sort of ceremony. Not quite as grandiose perhaps as we have seen at Wootton Bassett, but something on a scale with local MPs, the council and the armed forces representatives in the area."
