Lantern parade to light two of Wiltshire's white horses

A special ceremony to light up two white horses carved into the Wiltshire landscape has taken place.

More than 100 people took part in a lantern parade at Alton Barnes and Roundway Hill, Devizes, on Saturday evening.

The event was part of the Ageas Salisbury International Arts Festival and also marked the 200th anniversary of the horse at Alton Barnes.

The horses are normally only illuminated on the Winter Solstice.

Organiser Maria Bota said: "It's wonderful to be lighting it in its 200th anniversary year. I think we always celebrate the great landmarks in Wiltshire such as Stonehenge.

"I came to the county four years ago and discovered these white horses scattered around the landscape - often in beautiful settings.

"What we want to do is put a bit of a spotlight on them and enable people to discover them and discover the landscape they're set in.
