A man who went to the aid of a driver whose car had crashed has died after he was hit by another vehicle.

Police said a Land Rover Freelander skidded on ice on the A6108 at Bellerby, North Yorkshire, and came off the road, hitting the 57-year-old man.

The man had driven his Land Rover Defender down a bank to go to help a Vauxhall Corsa driver who had crashed.

Police said he had been trapped between the front of the Freelander and the back of his own vehicle.

He suffered serious injuries and was taken to Friarage Hospital in Northallerton, where he later died.

The incident happened at about 1900 GMT on Thursday.

'Treacherous' conditions

North Yorkshire Police said the man who died was from Catterick.

His wife, who was a passenger in the Defender, was not injured.

The woman driving the Freelander and the man driving the Corsa were also uninjured, police said.

Sgt John Lumbard, of North Yorkshire Police, said: "This incident demonstrates just how treacherous the road conditions can become and the danger motorists can face.

"I urge drivers to take extra care when making journeys.

"I am also appealing to pedestrians to pay attention to vehicles around them."
