North Yorkshire Police plan £250k ANPR camera upgrade

New technology costing £250,000 is to be used in North Yorkshire to help police track and trace criminals who cross over county borders.

North Yorkshire Police said almost a third of the county's crimes were committed by people from other areas.

The force said an upgrade of its Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system would enhance its ability to identify and catch offenders.

North Yorkshire Police currently has 24 ANPR cameras at seven fixed sites.

They scan vehicle registration numbers and check them against information stored in databases to identify vehicles connected to criminality.

Police and crime commissioner Julia Mulligan said more criminals would be caught and prosecuted as a result of the upgrade.
