Alternative vote a 'self-interested outrage'

David Cameron and former Labour minister Lord Reid have joined together to persuade people to vote no to the alternative vote in the referendum on changing the voting system.

The prime minister said that the existing voting system made politicians more accountable and allowed the public to throw out unpopular governments.

Lord Reid, who is one of the Tories' staunchest critics, agreed with Mr Cameron that the AV system eroded the principle of "one person, one vote", and claimed that the change would not be in the public interest, but the "self-interest of some politicians".

The referendum on the voting system takes place on 5 May.
