Nick Clegg: No referendum for elected House of Lords

The deputy prime minister said there was no need for a referendum to decide on the future of the House of Lords by turning it into an elected chamber.

The joint parliamentary committee on Lords reform is expected to recommend on Monday that an elected upper chamber would only be possible if the public backs it with a vote.

But Nick Clegg told Andrew Neil there was already cross-party and a referendum would be "an unnecessary turn of the wheel" costing millions of pounds.
