Prisoner votes: Dominic Raab and Shami Chakrabarti

Conservative MP Dominic Raab said the UK government should not abide by a European Court of Human Rights ruling to give votes to prisoners, claiming it "was not what we signed up to".

He said the worst Britain could get would be a "light diplomatic rap on the knuckles" for not obeying the ruling.

He was debating with Liberty Director Shami Chakrabarti who said MPs could not "pick and choose" which laws to abide by, and wondered what message it sent to young people with Asbos, and also to foreign leaders.

Justice Secretary Chris Grayling is expected to publish a draft bill offering MPs a range of options, ahead of a Friday afternoon deadline for Britain to respond to the court's latest order on the issue.
