Civil ceremonies are a part of everyday life, but it is only a few years since newspapers thrived on outing gay MPs, and some similar stories about public figure can still make headlines.
Susana Mendonca spoke to Donna Smith, author of Sex, Lies and Politics: Gay Politicians in the Press, and Labour MP Angela Eagle, the shadow leader of the House of Commons, about how attitudes have changed and if it is OK to be a gay MP today.
