Maude: Lobbying, MP recall powers and snoopers' charter

The government will bring in a statutory register of lobbyists, but there was still work to do to define its scope, Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude told the Sunday Politics.

He said it was "perfectly possible" the government could legislate for it in the current session, and it was "very unlikely indeed" this will not be in place by the 2015 general election.

Mr Maude described "recall" powers for voters to remove a disgraced MP as "quite a major constitutional change" and there had to be safeguards against MPs taking a principled, but unpopular, position being "hounded out" by constituents.

They also spoke about powers for the security services, known to some as the "snoopers' charter" which has divided Conservatives who generally support it and Liberal Democrats who are mainly against.
