Syria: Liam Fox and Peter Hain on UK and G20 reaction

Former Middle East Minister Peter Hain claimed the Syrian president was "backed by nearly 40% of the population, who don't much like him, but fear the alternative."

And he reckoned President Obama and Francois Hollande "have gone down the wrong track, and it's the wrong track we have been following as well."

While former defence secretary Liam Fox said the government defeat on Syria has left the prime minister "sidelined" and "sent into negotiations on Syria with no hand to play, and that is bad for the United Kingdom."

The pair spoke as international leaders were arriving in St Petersburg for a G20 meeting, where Syria was expected to dominate the negotiations.
