The 2001 attacks by Islamic terrorists on New York led to the war on terror and military intervention in Afghanistan and Iraq, led by US forces supported by the UK government under Tony Blair.
But British politicians, including current Labour leader Ed Miliband, take a different approach to sending UK military forces overseas.
