General Dannatt: Army had 'no desire' for Iraq war

General Sir Richard Dannatt has said the UK's Army had "no desire" to go to war in Iraq in 2003, but that the UK had a "war fighting army as well as a peace keeping army" and would feel a professional obligation to play more than just a secondary role.

General Dannatt, who was head of the British Army from 2006 and 2009, also said that troops were already "very heavily committed elsewhere" at the time of the invasion.

His comments came as he appeared before the Chilcot committee inquiry into the 2003 invasion of Iraq and its aftermath.
