Scottish west coast prawns to be sold by Sainsbury's

Scottish west coast prawns will be sold by Sainsbury's from this week following a deal struck between fishermen and the supermarket earlier this year.

The Scottish Langoustine Project will see shellfish graded as high quality distributed through about 500 of the company's 800 UK outlets.

Mallaig and Northwest Fishermen's Association is leading the scheme.

Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch SNP MSP Dave Thompson was involved in talks about setting up the project.

Until now much of the west coast catch has been exported and shoppers here have been largely buying imported farmed prawns from countries such as Thailand and Bangladesh.

The fishermen have welcomed the deal as a lifeline and hope it will bring stability to prices.
