Hial reports rise in June's passenger numbers

Some of Scotland's smallest airports have helped to push up passenger numbers for Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (Hial).

The Scottish government-owned operator handled 126,453 passengers last month, 5,282 more than in June 2012.

Wick John O'Groats, Kirkwall on Orkney and Sumburgh on Shetland all reported an increase in traffic.

However, passenger numbers were down at Hial's Inverness, Dundee and Tiree airports.

Barra, Benbecula and Stornoway airports on the Western Isles also reported lower figures.

But the introduction of Sunday flights in June has helped to boost numbers at Campbeltown by more than 15% to 923 passengers.

The figures have been released on the same day the Scottish government announced £12m funding for repairs to Sumburgh Airport's runway.
